Drivers on ride-hailing apps in Egypt usually cancel for one of four reasons: a high commission leaves too little from a short trip, the destination is only revealed after they accept, they are worried about how and when they will be paid, or the pickup is too far away. Some then ask the rider to cancel, or to pay more than the app shows. On Taxi Masr the commission is 5%, the captain sees the pickup, the destination, the distance and the meter fare before accepting, and the price is fixed when you confirm. A captain can offer you less than the meter, never more.

This guide explains why cancellations happen, what Taxi Masr does differently, and what you can do as a rider to get picked up the first time.

The scenario every rider knows

  • The phone call: the driver accepts, then calls to ask where you are going and how you will pay, and disappears if the answer does not suit him.
  • Waiting you out: the car does not move, or drives the other way on the map, until you give up and cancel yourself, sometimes paying a cancellation fee for it.
  • "Add 20 pounds": a message asking for more than the price on the screen before the driver will come.
  • The missed train: one cancellation after another, and you are late for work, an appointment or the train to Cairo.

Why do drivers cancel rides on ride-hailing apps in Egypt?

1. A commission that eats into short trips

On apps that take 20% – 25% of the fare, a short or medium trip in traffic can leave the driver with little after fuel and wear. Turning down or dropping those trips is a rational response, and the rider pays for it.

2. The destination appears only after accepting

On some apps the driver accepts first and sees where the trip is going afterwards. If it heads into heavy traffic, away from home, or past the end of a shift, the easiest way out is to cancel.

3. Worries about getting paid

A driver needs cash every day for fuel and his family. When card earnings are held for days, or offset against old balances, some drivers start avoiding card trips and insist on cash.

4. A long, unpaid drive to the pickup

When a request comes from three or four kilometres away through congested streets, nothing pays for that drive. Some drivers accept and then reconsider.

How Taxi Masr is built to reduce cancellations

What causes the cancellationTypical ride-hailing appTaxi Masr
Commission20% – 25% on some apps5% of the fare; tips are 100% the captain's
DestinationSometimes hidden until acceptedPickup, destination, distance and fare shown before accepting
PriceCan change, or be renegotiated by the driverMeter fare or a lower offer, fixed when you confirm; never above the meter
PaymentCard earnings can be delayedSettled at the end: cash, InstaPay, or a card on the captain's POS terminal
Distance to pickupRequests can come from far awayThe search starts close to you and widens gradually, up to 8 km
Peak timesSurge multipliersNo surge; the only increase is 25% from midnight to 5 am

None of this makes a cancellation impossible: a captain can still cancel, for example over a vehicle problem. But it removes the usual reasons to accept a trip and then drop it.

If your captain cancels anyway

  • You are not charged: when the captain cancels, no cancellation fee is taken from you. Fees apply only when you cancel after the first 2 minutes of an accepted ride.
  • You are told straight away: the app notifies you, and you can request again at once.
  • Report pressure: if a captain asked you to cancel, to ride outside the app, or to pay more than the price shown, file a complaint from the app and choose the trip. Ratings below the threshold lead to warnings and suspension.

How to get picked up the first time

  1. Pin your pickup precisely: stand where a car can stop safely, not inside a closed street or in the middle of a junction.
  2. Choose the exact destination: a specific gate or building, not just the district, so the price and route are right from the start.
  3. Add your stops when you request: up to 5 stops can be added while booking, and they are priced into the route. The destination cannot be changed mid-trip.
  4. Use the chat: if the captain cannot find you, message them in the app to agree a meeting point.
  5. Schedule critical trips: for a train or an exam, schedule the ride. The app reminds you 15 minutes before and starts looking for a captain about 10 minutes before the time you set.

Frequently asked questions about ride cancellations

Can a captain ask me to cancel and ride with him outside the app?

You should refuse. Outside the app there is no live tracking, no SOS button, no automatic night sharing and no record of the trip if you leave something behind. Report the request from the app.

Does the captain know how I will pay before accepting?

No. The captain sees the pickup, destination, distance and fare. You choose how to pay at the end of the ride: cash, InstaPay, or a card if the captain carries a POS terminal. In-app card payment is being activated.

Is there surge pricing that makes captains wait for a better fare?

No. The meter fare does not rise with demand. The only increase is the 25% night surcharge from midnight to 5 am.

What if I cancel because the captain is late?

Cancelling is free before a captain accepts and within the first 2 minutes after; after that a fee applies by trip stage, and the app shows the amount before you confirm. Message the captain first: most delays are a pickup point that is hard to find.

Can a captain ask for more than the price in the app?

No. The price is fixed when you confirm. If a captain asks for more, pay only the amount shown and file a complaint.

Your time is worth more than a string of cancellations. Download the Taxi Masr app and book a licensed taxi at the meter fare or less, with the price fixed before you ride.
