For most trips in a city like Mansoura, booking a licensed taxi through an app beats hailing one on the street: the car comes to your door, you know the price before you ride, you see the captain's name, plate and rating, and the trip is recorded if anything goes wrong. Hailing still wins in one case: an empty taxi is passing right now, the trip is short, and the meter is running. On Taxi Masr you pay the meter fare (EGP 20 flag fall + EGP 5 per km + EGP 0.50 per minute) or less, with no booking fee and no surge pricing.
Why hailing on the street is losing ground
- Waiting in the heat or the rain: standing on the pavement until an empty taxi passes and agrees to stop.
- "Not going that way": the driver slows down, asks where you are headed, and drives off because of traffic or direction.
- A price that depends on the driver: a meter that is "broken", or a flat price for a visitor who does not know the distances.
- No record: once you step out, nothing connects you to that car. If you leave your phone or a bag behind, finding the driver is hard.
Four things that decide it
1. Price and transparency
Many people assume an app costs more. On Taxi Masr the price is calculated on Taxi Masr's meter and shown before you request, and captains can send offers up to 20% below it. It does not rise with demand; the only increase is 25% from midnight to 5 am. On the street, the price is whatever the meter shows, if it is running, or whatever you manage to agree.
2. Safety
In the app you see the captain's name, car, plate number and rating before they arrive. You can share the live trip with family, rides between 10 pm and 6 am are shared automatically with your trusted contacts, and there is an SOS button. None of that exists with a car you flag down.
3. Payment
On the street it is almost always cash, and change is often a problem. With Taxi Masr you pay the exact amount on your screen in cash, by InstaPay, or by card on the captain's POS terminal if he carries one; in-app card payment is being activated.
4. Planning ahead
You cannot ask a passing taxi to wait outside your door at 6 am tomorrow. In the app you can schedule a ride, add up to 5 stops to one trip, or book for a family member who does not use the app.
App booking vs street hailing at a glance
| Hailing on the street | Booking with Taxi Masr |
|---|
| Where you get in | Wherever an empty taxi passes | At your door or office |
| Price before the ride | Unknown, or negotiated | Shown before you request; meter fare or less |
| Refused trips | Common in traffic or for short trips | The captain sees the destination and chooses to accept |
| Captain details | None | Name, car, plate and rating |
| Tracking and night safety | None | Live trip sharing, automatic night sharing, SOS |
| Payment | Usually cash only | Cash, InstaPay, or card on the captain's POS terminal |
| Left something behind | Hard to trace the car | The trip, captain and plate are in your history; report it from the app |
| Stops and scheduling | Hard to arrange, prices disputed | Up to 5 stops and scheduled rides, priced up front |
When hailing on the street still makes sense
If an empty licensed taxi is right in front of you, the trip is short, the driver runs the meter and you know the route, hailing it is quick and perfectly reasonable. The app earns its place on every other trip, especially the ones below.
When booking in the app is clearly better
- Travelling with children, older relatives or patients, for example to the Mansoura University hospitals.
- Late at night, so the trip is shared with your family automatically.
- With luggage or heavy shopping that you cannot carry to the main road.
- At rush hour and when schools and universities let out, when empty taxis are hard to find.
- In a part of the city you do not know, where you cannot judge the fare.
Digitising licensed taxis in the governorates: what has changed?
For years ride-hailing apps were concentrated in Greater Cairo and ran on private cars, while licensed taxis in governorate cities had no platform of their own: riders were stuck between haggling on the street and rush-hour prices in the apps, and drivers between empty cruising and commissions of up to a quarter of the fare. Digitising the taxi does not mean dropping the meter; it means its price is on your screen before you ride.
- Price up front: a published meter based on distance and time, fixed when you confirm.
- Payment: cash, InstaPay, or card on the captain's POS terminal, instead of cash alone.
- Safety: a recorded trip, live sharing, automatic night sharing and SOS.
- Planning: scheduled rides and up to 5 stops in a single trip.
- A fair deal for the driver: a 5% commission instead of 20% – 25%, and tips in full.
Taxi Masr started in Mansoura, and today the pickup has to be inside the Mansoura service area. We do not announce dates for other cities before they are actually ready.
Why captains like app requests too
Licensed taxi drivers in Mansoura get requests with the destination and fare shown up front, for a 5% commission, without spending fuel cruising empty streets or arguing about the price at the end of every ride.
Frequently asked questions: app taxi or street taxi
Are the cars in the app the same licensed taxis I see on the street?
Yes. Taxi Masr accepts licensed taxis only, driven by captains with a professional driving licence whose documents are reviewed before activation.
Is there a booking fee for ordering in the app?
No. You pay the meter fare or a lower offer, with no booking fee and no surge. From midnight to 5 am a 25% night surcharge applies.
How long does a taxi take to arrive?
It depends on how many captains are near you. The app shows the captain's position and arrival once a request is accepted, and if nobody is close it widens the search automatically, up to 8 km.
Can I rate the captain after the ride?
Yes, from 1 to 5 stars, with optional tags and a comment. Captains whose average falls too low are warned and then suspended.
