Privacy Policy
What data we collect, why, who we share it with, and your rights — in plain language.
Taxi Masr ("we", "the platform") respects your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect when you use the Taxi Masr apps (rider and captain) and the website taximasr.app, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights. By using the service you agree to this policy.
1. Data we collect
Data you give us
- Account: phone number (your account identifier), name, and optionally email, profile photo and preferred language.
- Captains additionally: national ID number, driving licence details and expiry, vehicle and operating licence details, document photos, and gender (for the "female captain" option).
- Trips: pickup, destination and stops, preferences, notes, and the rider's name and number when booking for someone else.
- Communication: messages in trip chat, ratings and comments, complaints and attachments, and your correspondence with support.
- Trusted contacts: names and numbers you add yourself to receive trip sharing and SOS alerts. We do not read your address book.
- Saved places, favourite captains and your referral code.
Data collected automatically
- Location (see section 3).
- Device and usage data: device type and OS, push notification token, IP address, error logs and usage times.
- Trip data: timestamps of each stage, distance and duration, fare and its breakdown, payment method and status.
Payment data
When paying by card or Apple Pay you enter your details directly on a secure checkout page run by Paymob, licensed by the Central Bank of Egypt. We never receive or store your card number. We keep only the transaction reference, amount and status.
2. How we use data
- Running the service: matching requests with nearby captains, computing fares, tracking trips, payments and receipts.
- Safety: verifying captains, operating SOS and trip sharing, monitoring ratings, and investigating complaints.
- Communication: trip notifications, verification codes, support messages and scheduled-ride reminders. Marketing messages are optional and can be turned off in Settings.
- Improvement: aggregated statistics about demand and supply by area to improve availability, fares and quality.
- Legal compliance: payment and tax records, and responding to lawful legal requests.
We do not use your data for individual pricing decisions; the fare depends only on the official tariff, distance and time.
3. Location data
- Riders: we use your location while you use the app to set the pickup point, show nearby taxis and track your trip. We do not track your location in the background outside a trip.
- Captains: while "Available" or on a trip, the app sends your location every few seconds (including in the background) so riders can see you approaching and nearby requests reach you. This stops as soon as you tap "Unavailable".
- What we keep: live positions are stored briefly in fast memory and deleted automatically within seconds. We permanently keep only significant trip points (pickup, stops, destination, route snapshots) for billing, safety and disputes.
- Trip sharing: when you enable sharing (manually or automatically on night rides), anyone with the link can see the car's position until the trip ends or you revoke the link.
4. Who we share data with
We never sell your personal data. We share it only in these cases:
- Between rider and captain: the captain sees your first name, pickup, destination, preferences and rating; you see their name, photo, rating and car details. Phone numbers are used for in-app calling during the trip only.
- Your trusted contacts: at your request or per your settings (SOS / night rides).
- Service providers processing data on our behalf under data-protection agreements: Paymob (payments), Google Firebase (phone verification and push notifications), Google Maps (maps, routing and addresses), SMS and WhatsApp providers (verification codes and safety messages), and Amazon Web Services (server and database hosting).
- Authorities: upon a valid legal request or to protect user safety, within the limits of Egyptian law.
- Affiliates or successors in a merger or acquisition, bound by this policy.
5. Data retention
- Account data: for as long as the account is active, deleted or anonymised within 30 days of a deletion request.
- Trip and payment records: 5 years per accounting and tax requirements, then anonymised.
- Captain documents: while active on the platform and up to one year after account closure, for disputes and compliance.
- Chat messages and complaints: 12 months after the trip or complaint is closed.
- Live locations: seconds (temporary memory).
6. Data security
We use encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest, role-based access controls, an audit log of every sensitive administrative action, and rate limiting to prevent abuse. No system can guarantee absolute security; we will notify you and the competent authorities without undue delay of any breach affecting your data.
7. Your rights
Under Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020, you have the right to:
- Access your data and know how it is processed.
- Correct inaccurate data (directly in the app for name, email and photo).
- Delete your account and data, subject to legal retention of payment records.
- Object to marketing messages and turn them off at any time in Settings.
- Withdraw consent to specific processing (such as location) in your device settings, noting that some features will not work without it.
- Lodge a complaint with the competent Personal Data Protection Centre.
To exercise any of these rights, write to support@taximasr.app from your registered email or number. We reply within 30 days.
8. Children
The service is intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. An adult may book a ride for a child using "Ride for someone else" and remains responsible for the trip.
9. Changes and contact
We may update this policy from time to time. We will publish the new version here with its update date and notify you in the app of material changes. Questions: support@taximasr.app.
