To verify a taxi driver's details in Egypt before you get in, match three things against what the app shows once the ride is accepted: the plate number, the car's colour and model, and the captain's name. In a street taxi, make sure the plate is a taxi plate and the meter runs from the start of the trip. A few seconds at the car door save you a lot of trouble later.

On Taxi Masr a captain receives no rides until they have uploaded their national ID card and driving licence and the Taxi Masr team has reviewed them and approved the account. Even so, checking at pickup is your step, because it is the only thing that confirms the car in front of you is the one that accepted your ride.

What does the app show you about the captain and the car?

As soon as a captain accepts your ride, the ride screen shows:

  • The captain's name: and their photo, if they have added one to their account.
  • Rating and number of trips: the average rating from previous passengers and how many trips they have completed.
  • The taxi plate number: the digits and letters as registered on their account.
  • The car: colour, make, model and year.
  • The captain's position on the map: so you can follow them until they reach your pickup point.

Steps to check before you get in

  1. Match the plate number first: it is the clearest sign; do not rely on the colour, because many cars look alike.
  2. Match the colour and model: if the car differs from the one in the app, do not get in.
  3. Ask before you introduce yourself: ask the captain “Whose name is the ride under?”; the right captain sees your name and destination in their app.
  4. Share the ride: on the ride screen tap “Share ride” and send the link to a family member.

How do you check a taxi you hailed on the street?

With a street taxi there is no app showing you the driver's details, but some signs help:

  • The taxi plate: the top band of a taxi plate in Egypt is orange, while a private car plate is blue.
  • The meter: a licensed taxi has a meter, so ask for it to be switched on as soon as you set off.
  • Photograph the plate: take a photo of the plate number and send it to a family member before you get in; it also helps if you leave something in the car.

Warning signs: when should you not get in?

  • A different car or plate: do not get in, even if the driver says they are “standing in” for the captain.
  • A driver who is not the captain: if the name or photo does not match the person in the car, do not get in.
  • A request to cancel and ride “off the app”: you lose the trip record, tracking, the SOS button and the price you were shown.
  • A covered or unreadable plate: with a street taxi, choose another car.
  • Refusing to run the meter: with a street taxi, it is better to wait for another car.

If you refused to ride because the car did not match the app, file a complaint in the app, choose the “Safety” type and explain what happened. If a cancellation fee was charged in that case, mention it in the complaint so the support team can review it.

After the ride: ratings and lost items

  • Rate the captain: with stars, notes such as politeness or safe driving, and a comment if you like. A captain whose average falls below 3 out of 5 after at least 10 ratings is suspended automatically until the team reviews the account.
  • Lost items: your ride is saved with the captain's name and plate number; file a complaint of the “Lost item” type in the app and support will follow it up.

Frequently asked questions about checking a taxi driver

Does Taxi Masr check captains before they start?

Yes. A captain uploads their national ID card and driving licence, and the account is only activated after the Taxi Masr team has reviewed and approved them.

What should I do if a different car from the one in the app arrives?

Do not get in. Cancel the ride and file a “Safety” complaint, and say whether a cancellation fee was charged so support can review it.

Can my family see the car details on the share link?

Yes: the captain's first name, the plate number, the car's colour and model and its position on the map, without any phone numbers.

How do I check a taxi I hailed on the street?

Make sure the top band of the plate is orange (taxi), ask for the meter to be switched on, and photograph the plate and send it to a family member before you get in.

Does the emergency button call the police?

No. The SOS button sends your location and a tracking link to your trusted contacts and alerts the Taxi Masr team. In immediate danger, call the police on 122.

A few seconds of checking at the car door is the simplest safety step there is. Download Taxi Masr to see the captain's name and plate number before you get in.
